Essay

An essay is a document written from the author’s point of view to convey a personal opinion. Essays tie together multiple sources of information to support the author's central argument. Structured in paragraphs, essays are a common method of academic assessment. An essay is structured into: Introduction, main body and conclusions.

Introduction

  • > Brief background and/or current situation
  • > The aim of the essay
  • > Writer's position
  • > Essay outline

Main body

  • > Paragraphs that develop the key argument
  • > Paragraphs showing different viewpoints
  • > Reference to sources, statistics and data to support the writer's arguments

Paragraphs start with a topic sentence, stating the respective argument. The rest of the paragraph will then develop the argument, clearly showing the writer's opinion supported by evidence from other authors.

Conclusions

  • > Summary of the key points
  • > Statement clarifying the author's general conclusion
  • > Wider implications and future action
