Essay

An essay is a document written from the author’s point of view to convey a personal opinion. Essays tie together multiple sources of information to support the author's central argument. Structured in paragraphs, essays are a common method of academic assessment. An essay is structured into: Introduction, main body and conclusions.

Introduction

> Brief background and/or current situation
> The aim of the essay
> Writer's position
> Essay outline

Main body

> Paragraphs that develop the key argument
> Paragraphs showing different viewpoints
> Reference to sources, statistics and data to support the writer's arguments

Paragraphs start with a topic sentence, stating the respective argument. The rest of the paragraph will then develop the argument, clearly showing the writer's opinion supported by evidence from other authors.

Conclusions

> Summary of the key points
> Statement clarifying the author's general conclusion
> Wider implications and future action
